There are two types of traffic

Everyone wants to be in the number 1 position on a SERP (search engine results page) when a potential customer searches for their products or services through a search engine like Google. We all know that most people click on the first few results and don’t bother to navigate further down the SERP to find hidden gems of the website.

There are many ways to improve your ranking position, but let’s start with how to get your site to simply show up in search engines like Google. There are two main ways to get traffic: paid traffic and “free” traffic.

Paid traffic is often called SEM (Search Engine Marketing) or PPC (Pay Per Click). This method usually involves paying search engines such as Google or Google Shopping, and/or social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or Snapchat to display your ads, so you can generate clicks or traffic to your website.

While SEM and PPC are great ways to increase traffic, it’s not always the best path for beginners.Why? Because they require an ongoing budget, digital marketing skills, and can be costly and time-consuming to make sure you’re generating ROI (return on investment – i.e., actually making money from your paid advertising).

On the other hand, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is often referred to as “organic” or “free” traffic. This traffic is “free” in the sense that you are not paying search engines or social media platforms for each click to your website.

However, building traffic from SEO takes time and effort. To do this, you have to create the right kind of content to get people interested in your site. But, if you use the right techniques, once you generate SEO traffic, it is very likely that the increase in traffic will be sustained for a longer period of time.

The big SEO problem

In a nutshell: the big problem with SEO is that many Internet marketers out there keep suggesting time-consuming and ineffective techniques that stopped working years ago. These techniques include keyword stuffing, building backlinks, creating “Amazon affiliate” type niche sites, and more.

These techniques may have worked like a charm two (or ten) years ago, but some can have detrimental consequences today! Google has changed the way it refers traffic to websites through its search engine over the years. If you’re relying on outdated techniques, you’re wasting time, money or worse, destroying your site’s chances of ranking.

Another mistake: many bloggers and Internet marketers confuse content creation with vlogging, and are actually writing about their day or about things that interest them, rather than topics that people are actively searching for. And so thousands of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) trying to learn how to generate traffic are wasting their time on things that simply don’t work.

I hate wasting time. I hate not getting a good return on investment. You probably do too. For a while, I was stuck unable to move forward, wringing my hands in frustration. Exactly how to generate SEO traffic

Organic traffic is the traffic you generate to your website by creating content such as articles or videos, without paying per click to get traffic to your website. You should start with the “alphabet soup method” to find the search terms that people actually search for. You can do this by using Google’s native suggested search features and running your ideas through the alphabet. And don’t worry, this cool tool is free!

Next, you need to do a competitor analysis to see what topics are worth writing about and in what order. I suggest you use the Content Mix to help you decide the order. And I can’t stress enough how important it is to build E.A.T. (Expertise, Authoritativeness and Authoritativeness). (Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust) for Google.

Let’s break down exactly how to do each of these things:

1. Conduct your search analysis

You need the right content to create a sustainable, targeted traffic source. You may be surprised to learn that people are still reading blogs (you’re reading this one, right?) and that the video world is booming when it comes to creating SEO content with a large audience.

If you remember anything from this article it should be this: to generate traffic, you need to create content about things that people are actually searching for on search engines like Google or YouTube.

As an e-merchant, you want to share information that can turn your traffic into paying customers, while still being useful. To do this, you can create content such as articles (a blog) and videos (YouTube channel) that help you explain your products, or show them in action.

If you create the right blog content, you can generate traffic to your website directly from Google, the king of search engines. YouTube is also a search engine, and with the right video content it can also help generate traffic to your site.

But what should you write about? Have you been stumped? Maybe you’ve even resorted to the help of keyword tools to find topics to write about. Most keyword tools tell you how much traffic you can get through PPC advertising, rather than actual traffic through SEO. That’s where the “alphabet soup method” comes in handy. It involves finding keywords using Google’s Suggested Search functions, and going through the alphabet.

2. Using the alphabet soup method

The alphabet soup method involves using Google’s suggested search terms to get ideas about what people are actually looking for.

Let’s say your e-commerce store sells electric scooters. What you need to do is type “Your keyword idea ‘A'” into Google (without hitting enter) and take a look at the suggestions that come up. Here’s what it looks like in our example:

This gives you an idea of the type of topics people are actually searching for in the search engine. In the example above, you can see that people are searching for “adult” electric scooters. If you sell these products, you might want to cover that topic in your blog. Or even “Accessories”, which are items you can sell in your online store.

The goal is to go through the entire alphabet and write down your ideas. Thus, “Electric scooter B, C, D…”

You can also add interrogative words like “How to” to see the type of questions people ask on the Internet so you can write articles for your blog. You can add a star (*) before or after your search for Google to suggest other terms.

In addition, it’s always a good idea to take a look at the suggested questions at the top of the page and the suggested searches at the bottom of the search page for even more ideas.

Another way to find topics such as Quora and Reddit. These can help you get an idea of what people are saying or searching for in your niche. 3. Conduct a competitor analysis

Once you have some topic ideas, it’s time to conduct a competitive analysis and decide which ones are worth writing about. Some of the topic ideas you’ve found using the alphabet soup method may be too competitive, while others may be low-hanging fruit. Next, you should evaluate your topic on Google to see if there is a lot of competition around it or not.

Perform a competition analysis by typing your topic ideas into Google and looking at the results. If you find many high quality, relevant, long-form articles (3,000+ words) from credible or top sources in your industry, chances are your topic is well covered and very competitive.

If the topic is already covered by authority or popular sites, government websites or sites with a lot of traffic, it may be best to leave that topic alone for now. As a new site, you’ll have a hard time beating the well-known sites in Google using such a competitive term.

On the other hand, if you find little or no relevant information on your topic, or if the first few results seem to be for forums, pdf documents or other short, low quality content (less than 1000 words), you may have found an excellent topic to write about! This also includes topics that are low information, outdated, irrelevant or unreliable. These topics will serve you better to start with, and will help you rank faster and drive more traffic from Google to your site.

4. Be sure to follow the content mix

This gives you an idea of the type of topics people are actually searching for in the search engine. In the example above, you can see that people are searching for “adult” electric scooters. If you sell these products, you might want to cover that topic in your blog. Or even “Accessories”, which are items you can sell in your online store.
